Welcome to the wonder years, where students learn so much about themselves and their world. All our elementary schools have compassionate and encouraging teachers along with engaging curriculum. The students are our number one priority at your neighborhood elementary school or school of choice.

We have excellent elementary schools in Buffalo, Hanover and Montrose. Using the GuideK12 link or graphic below, find your neighborhood school based on your address.

Multi-age instruction at Discovery emphasizes personalized learning, and looping allows students to form long-term, positive relationships with teachers. Discovery Elementary serves 250 students in a welcoming, small-school environment.

Discovery Elementary School's (DES) Kindergarten Registration Lottery is scheduled for Tuesday, January 30, 2024.

If your child is registered in the Buffalo-Hanover-Montrose School District, you will receive a mailing of information regarding the DES Kindergarten Lottery. Information and application forms will be mailed out at the end of December. Applications for DES kindergarten are due back to the DES office by Monday, January 29, 2024.  If you need more information, please call the DES Office 763.682.8400.

If you wish to apply for a child who will be entering 1st-5th Grade for the 2024-2025 school year, please complete the application below. Upon completion, please send the application via email to Discovery-Lottery@bhmschools.org or mail to: Discovery Elementary School 301 2nd Ave NE. Buffalo, MN 55313

Any 1st-5th Grade Enrollment Application will be entered into a wait pool. If your child is drawn from the wait pool you will be contacted via phone.

Hanover Elementary is a warm and welcoming school where children grow academically, socially and physically. HES offers personalized learning, use of technology to improve learning, specialist classes promote learning in music, physical education and art. Classrooms expand to the great outdoors with their many acre school forest and family-focused events.

If you do not live within the Montrose Elementary School of Innovation (MESI) boundary, any local BHM family may apply to Montrose Elementary School of Innovation.

As part of the Northwest Suburban Integration School District (NWSISD), students are provided with FREE transportation. NWSISD is a collaborative of seven area school districts in the northwest metro providing schools and communities with a variety of programs and services to promote racial equity and cultural awareness. The seven member school districts are Anoka-Hennepin, Brooklyn Center, Buffalo-Hanover-Montrose, ISD 728 (Elk River area), Fridley, Osseo, and Rockford.

Application process for the 2024-25 school year begins:

October 13, 2023 - Magnet Lottery Priority Application opens at 9:00 a.m.
December 31, 2023 - Magnet Lottery Priority Application closes at midnight
January 3-10, 2024 - Magnet School Lotteries are performed
Week of January 12, 2024 - Assignment and non-assignment letters mailed to all families who submitted applications.
January 8, 2024 - Magnet Lottery Application Reopens
February 16, 2024 - Deadline for families to accept assignments/enroll at magnet schools
March 8, 2024 - Magnet Lottery Application closes
March 11-13, 2024 - Tier 2 Magnet School Lotteries are performed
March 13, 2024 - Magnet Lottery Application opens
Week of March 18, 2024 - Assignment and non-assignment letters mailed to all families who submitted applications
April 12, 2024 - Deadline for families to accept assignments/enroll at magnet schools
April 19, 2024 - Magnet Lottery Application is closed for season
Week of April 29, 2024 - Randomized wait lists are provided to each magnet school/districts

Northwinds Elementary focuses on the student's individual needs, whether it be learning interventions or more challenging instruction. NES emphasizes positive interactions and uses "brain smart strategies". Specialized classes in music, physical education, Innovation Station and World Cultures incorporates the four Cs into students' learning.

Parkside is a school that fosters creativity for diverse learners, with dedicated staff working with families to ensure the best education experience possible. Students grow by challenging themselves, learning to interact positively and reaching for academic success. Teachers use flexible seating and workspace options to individualize learning and enhance engagement. Parkside is home to the district-wide Quest program, serving highly gifted students in grades 2-5. In addition, Title I instruction and Reading Corps tutoring support qualifying students. 

If you do not live within the Tatanka Elementary STEM School (TESS)  boundary, any local BHM family may apply to Tatanka Elementary STEM School.

Under the Enrollment Options Program, students in Minnesota can enroll in a public school outside the district in which they live. This enrollment option encourages parents to become knowledgeable about the needs and interests of their children.

Families outside the Buffalo-Hanover-Montrose School District may apply to Tatanka Elementary STEM School or Montrose Elementary School of Innovation. As part of the Northwest Suburban Integration School District (NWSISD), students in member districts can attend any magnet school for FREE with transportation provided. Member districts include Anoka-Hennepin, Brooklyn Center, Elk River, Fridley, Osseo and Rockford. To attend Tatanka Elementary STEM School or Montrose Elementary School of Innovation, the following form also needs to be completed:
