Academics

Academic enrichment offerings begin after the start of the school year. Parents and students should watch the school monitors, call the Activities Line and check our website for information regarding registration and first meeting times. There is a $25 fee to be in any of these activities and registration is done through the School Store in Campus Portal. The following activities are available to students:  

6th Grade Singers is open to any 6th grader who is interested in having an engaging choral experience. The choir performs complex two-part music of all genres (pop, broadway, foreign, folk, and more.) This ensemble works on developing singing skills, improvisational skills, stage presence, and collaboration with others. The 6th Grade Singers perform in two concerts during the year. Mr. Fishman is the advisor for 6th Grade Singers.

6th Grade Singers start in the middle of October and runs all year.

Chamber Choir is an after school choir for girls in grades 7 and 8. It meets every Monday after school from 3:30 - 4:30 pm. This choir is auditioned, which means that you must sign up for a tryout/audition. Mrs. Menzemer is the advisor.

Chamber Choir auditions start in the middle of September and runs all year.  

Chamber Orchestra is an after school orchestra for students in grades 7 and 8. It meets every Tuesday after school from 3:30 - 4:30 pm. The orchestra is an auditioned group, which means that you must sign up to try out/audition. Ms, Eicher is the advisor for Chamber Orchestra.

Chamber orchestra auditions take place in September and the group runs from October through the end of the school year.

Jazz Band is a combined group of 7th and 8th graders. All regular rehearsals are on Wednesdays from 3:30 - 4:30 pm. By combining the grades, the younger students and those that are first timers adjust to this very different type of ensemble.  There will be a three week trial after which students are asked to commit to the first series of rehearsals. Mrs. Svec and Mr. Veith are the advisors for Jazz Band.

Jazz Band begins the middle of October and runs through March.  

Knowledge Bowl is a team contest in which students compete in written and oral rounds by answering questions related to all areas of learning.  Knowledge Bowl is an interdisciplinary academic program for students. They attend meets where they compete with area schools.  Mr. Nosbush is the advisor for the 6th grade team and Mr. Cagle is the advisor for the 7th and 8th grade team.

Knowledge Bowl starts the end of October and runs through the first week of December. 

Math League meets once a week, typically on Mondays, 3:30 - 5 pm for weekly games, competition practices and learning how to be a superb math problem-solver.  There are five Math League meets competing against other local middle schools and a regional MATHCOUNTS competition is St. Cloud.  Any 6th, 7th or 8th grader can join Math League (including students participating in other activities). Mr. Hermanson is the advisor for Math League.

Math League starts the beginning of October and runs through mid March.  

Speech is a great opportunity for any student in grades 6, 7 and 8.  Students will get to pick a speech that interests them, or write their own!  During the season, students practice their speech, improve their speaking and presentation skills, and also get to be a part of a team. We travel to different schools and compete at 4-5 speech meets a season, where students get to share their work with other students and get feedback from judges!  Mrs. Polaschek is the advisor for Speech

Speech starts at the end of November and runs until late January.

Student Council consists of 6th, 7th and 8th graders who are elected by their peers.  Each grade has six Student Council representatives and elections are held in September.  Throughout the school year, Student Council meets and works together in order to plan Pep Fests, School Dances and other events.  These students also voice the concerns of their peers to administration and bring new ideas as to how to build community within BCMS. The advisors are Ms. Claseman and Ms. Schahn.

Student Council applications are available the middle of September.  Voting will be at the end of September  and meetings begin the middle of October and runs all year. 

Theatre club is an after school group that meets Tuesdays and Thursdays, 3:30- 5 pm. The club is designed to be a non-audition experience for those who want to broaden their theatre experiences through improv, script work, and creating. Students get to try many different avenues of the theatre experience. Mr. Aldrich is the advisor.

Theatre Club starts in February and runs through March.

Yearbook is an after school club for all students.  Students take pictures, edit, write stories, and create pages for the school yearbook, which is distributed at the end of the school year. Grades 6 and 7 meet on Thursdays and grade 8 meets on Tuesdays from 3:30 to 4:30.  Students must fill out an application and yearbook staff members are selected from the applications. The application includes an essay and a teacher recommendation. Mrs. Kelm and Mrs. Weise are the advisors.

Yearbook begins in October and runs through March.  There is one additional meeting in May to help distribute the yearbooks.
