Summer Orchestra Camp builds skills, relationships

Orchestra students from Buffalo Community Middle School and Buffalo High School came together for the fourth annual Summer Orchestra Camp from July 7–11. Throughout the week, students rehearsed in both large and small groups, with BCMS students also receiving mentorship from high school musicians.

“I like camp because the songs are really fun and everyone is helpful and nice,” said Haddie Bermel, who will enter ninth grade in the fall. “You’ll get breaks with friends and it’s just a fun thing to do in the summer.”

“It was really welcoming,” agreed Camron Tubbs, who is also entering his first year at the high school. “You meet a lot of new people. For students going into high school, it helps knowing some of the high school orchestra students; it makes for an easier transition.”

In addition to their rehearsals, students were treated to performances by several guest artists. These musicians showcased a range of styles — including classical, folk, jazz, and pop — and shared insights about life as professional performers. Guest artists included a violist and a cellist affiliated with the Des Moines, South Dakota, and Duluth Symphony Orchestras, as well as The OK Factor, a new-classical crossover duo.

With a flexible, week-long schedule, BHS orchestra director Kristine Wiese designed the camp to inspire students through engaging music, activities, and unique musical opportunities.

“My favorite part of camp was how Mrs. Wiese pushed the younger kids, and always made room for questions and help,” said BCMS student Stella Schlak.

Other students agreed that the opportunity to try challenging new music, meet musicians of different ages, and engage with friends made for a great experience.

“I really enjoyed summer camp because the music is challenging and it sounds very cool,” said Eli Koch.
