Welcome to Discovery Elementary

Discovery Elementary is the only kindergarten through fifth grade multiage school in the Buffalo-Hanover-Montrose school district. Established in 1997, Discovery Elementary has maintained a student enrollment of less than 260 students. Parents in the Buffalo-Hanover-Montrose school district may choose to enroll their children in our school. Discovery Elementary was awarded the prestigious Ernest L. Boyer Best Practices Award in 2001 honoring elmentary schools with outstanding parent and community involvement programs.

Reminder

Students are allowed to enter the building beginning at 8:30 a.m. Teachers are attending meetings or completing preparations before that time. Thanks in advance for your cooperation with this guideline. Please make sure that your children dress appropriately for the weather for outdoor recess. The children go out daily, unless the temp is below zero.

School Cancellation Policy

In case of a late start, early dismissal or school cancellation due to weather (or emergency) conditions, parents will be notified by phone and email through our automated parent notification system (Blackboard Connect). For additional updates, you can also check our school district website at www.bhmschools.org or tune into radio stations WCCO (830 AM) or KRWC (1360 AM) or follow announcements on television stations KARE 11, KMSP 9, KSTP 5 and WCCO 4.

If the district has to close school and send students home early, we will assume that your child will go to his/her normal destination at the end of the day. Please discuss with your child what he/she is to do in case early dismissal is called.

Two for One

Mat Nelson is Hired as the Next Discovery Elementary Principal and BHM Technology Director

Mat Nelson will hit the ground running on July 1, 2013 as he takes on the new position of Discovery Elementary Principal and District Technology Director. Nelson replaces Rick Toso who has been serving as the Discovery administrator for the last two years and Ed Cox who has been serving as the interim technology director since September 2012.

Discovery Elementary Kindergarten Lottery 2013

Discovery Elementary School's(DES)Kindergarten Registration Lottery is scheduled for Tuesday, February 19, at 6:30 p.m.

If your child is registered in the Buffalo-Hanover-Montrose school district and his/her birth date indicates eligiblity to start kindergarten in September 2013, you will receive a mailing of information regarding the DES Kindergarten Lottery. Information and application forms will be mailed out before the end of January. Applications, for DES kindergarten, are due back to the DES office by Wednesday, February 13. DES Student Representatives

The Discovery Student Representatives are a group of students who serve in leadership roles in our school. They participate in many activities such as planning and coordinating fun school-wide activites, helping with I Love to Read, serving as hosts for special visitors and being good role models. The students normally meet twice a month. This year we have 15 Student Representatives in grades 3-4-5.
