General Information on the Meal Program:

What is a Reimbursable Meal, and why is it so important?

Tatanka Elementary School Food Service, along with our other districts schools, participates in the Federal Child Nutrition Funds program.  Federal law states that to receive Child Nutrition Funds, "a reimbursable meal must be served".

Each month the total number of meals are counted and a "claim" is made to the state agency for these funds.  A reimbursable meal contains what is called "Food Components".

What are "Food Components"?
A food component is "part of a whole" and is one of the four food groups which compose the reimbursable meal (either lunch or breakfast).

What are the Components for Lunch?
Students are offered at least 5 food items from the 4 components listed below:

  • Milk (as a beverage)
  • Meat or Meat Alternate
  • Vegetables/Fruits ( 2 or more servings of different kinds of vegetables and/or fruits)
  • Grains/Breads

Students:

  • must select at least 3 out of the 5 food items offered.
  • must take full servings to count toward a reimbursable meal.

What are the Components for Breakfast?
Students are offered at least 4 food items from the 4 components listed below:

  • Milk (as a beverage)
  • Juice/Fruit/Vegetable
  • Grains/Breads
  • Meat or Meat Alternates

Students:

  • Must select at least 3 out of the 4 food items offered.
  • Must take full servings to count toward a reimbursable meal.

If you have further questions on our food program, please contact Susan Karels-Brown Food Service Manager at Tatanka, by email or by phone at 763.682.8639.   We also have applications available for the free and reduced lunch program on our district site for your convenience.  Thank you, and we look forward to seeing you and your student!
