World Languages

The language department at BHS proudly offers three world languages students can explore:
French, German, and Spanish. Studying a new language opens the door to a wide variety of
opportunities including: job marketability, social enlightenment and travel enjoyment. All three
language offerings promote cultural awareness, as well as reading, writing, speaking and listening skills. Students can begin their world language experience as ninth graders and continue through high school, potentially testing out of several language courses at a college/university.

Of all that we inherit in our culture, of all the socially transmitted behaviors from that culture, perhaps the most influential is language.  As we acquire knowledge of a language, that language sharpens our own perceptions of the world around us.  Second language study can help someone get beyond their linguistic ethnocentrism and is important in understanding how other cultures operate.  The many nations of our one world are becoming increasingly interdependent and intertwined.  Here at Buffalo High School, we offer three world languages: French, Spanish and German, in addition to a World Cultures course that looks at languages and their influence on culture.
