Science

Following in the footsteps of Newton, Pasteur, and Galileo Galilei, science course offerings are lab-oriented with a focus on hands-on problem solving.  Final assessments are project-oriented, using the application of science concepts to solve problems.  For example, in Science 9, the rocket project encourages students to apply the concepts of mechanics to design, fly, and analyze the motion of water bottle rockets.  The students are then graded on applying the concepts they have learned.  Technical writing skills are enhanced during the lab write-ups and research projects. In the physics department, grant money has been secured to lower the student to computer ratio.  Computer hardware and software programs allow students to study such concepts as motion, sound, electricity, magnetism, and optics.  The Biology and Natural Resources classes use the school's prairie and wetland ecosystems for the study of ecological concepts.  Overall, the science department offers 17 different courses, which include traditional college prep series courses designed for technical preparation and high-interest courses such as Biotechnology, Wildlife Biology, Astronomy, and Meteorology.  An Advanced Placement course in Physics, and an Advanced course in Biology prepare students to take AP tests that may help them qualify for college credits.  An Enriched Science 9 course is offered to provide challenging activities and content for high-achieving freshmen.  Anatomy and Physiology and College Chemistry are College-in-the-Schools courses offered.  The students receive college credit for successful completion of these.  Graduation requirements in science include 9th grade Physical Science, General Biology and a third additional science credit that must include a course in Chemistry or Physics.  For students with 4 year post secondary plans, it is usually recommended that they take both General Chemistry and General Physics at the high school level.
