Mat Nelson is Hired as the Next Discovery Elementary Principal and BHM Technology Director

Mat Nelson will hit the ground running on July 1, 2013 as he takes on the new position of Discovery Elementary Principal and District Technology Director. Nelson replaces Rick Toso who has been serving as the Discovery administrator for the last two years and Ed Cox who has been serving as the interim technology director since September 2012.

Nelson rose to the top out of the 68 applicants for the position. He is currently the principal at Jefferson Elementary STEM School (Science, Technology, Engineering and Math) in Winona, MN. He has his college degree in elementary education and special education from Dakota State University in Madison, SD where he also earned his Master of Science in education technology. Nelson went on to get his doctorate in education in educational administration and leadership from the University of South Dakota in Vermillion.

Prior to his principal position, Nelson taught 6th grade in Madison and was an adjunct professor at Dakota State University. "I believe my educational background in both educational technology and school leadership, along with my experiences as a teacher and school administrator, have prepared me very well for this new position," states Nelson.

His range of experience also impressed Superintendent Scott Thielman. "When the decision was made to combine the positions, we knew it was going to be a challenge to find the right person for the job. With Mat's experience as an elementary principal and with his graduate degree in educational technology, we knew he was the best fit for this position. Mat will be a great addition to our district."

Not only did Nelson's education and leadership background make him stand out, but also his values, how he sees diversity as a strength, and his ability to look and think ahead. Nelson says, "It's very important to build and maintain relationships with students, staff, parents and the community to create a positive school atmosphere. It's also my job as a leader to help inspire and unlock the potential in others. I am committed to do what is best for the students, staff and the communities we serve."

Nelson and his family are excited to join the BHM community.  "It is clear that there is a good educational community in place here, and I look forward to the opportunity to be a part of and serve it."
