School Board Approves John Heltunen as the New Director of Buildings and Grounds
Wednesday Aug 14, 13

School is just a couple weeks away from starting and John Heltunen has just been named the new BHM Buildings and Grounds Director. The school board approved his appointment at their Monday, August 12 board meeting. He replaces Eric Hamilton, who has worked in the district for the past 15 years, who took a buildings and grounds director position in the Edina Public Schools. Hamilton will continue to oversee summer projects as they come to an end to help with the transition. Heltunen starts in BHM Schools on Thursday, August 29.

Heltunen graduated in 2003 with a Bachelor of Science degree in technology education from Bemidji State University. He has experience working in a similar buildings and grounds director position with the St. Anthony-New Brighton School District and also as a technology teacher in the same district for nine years.

"He will bring a unique perspective to the position because he was a classroom teacher," comments Director of Finance and Operations Gary Kawlewski. "His classroom and coaching experience have provided him with an invaluable perspective in understanding how the buildings and grounds department impacts the students, staff and the public. He will be a great addition to the BHM team."

Heltunen is excited to begin in the BHM District. He explains, "I have talked with others (about the BHM School District) and they said that this is a great place to raise a family. I'm anxious to get started here, meet the staff and get to know the facilities."

"Students first" is Heltunen's motto. "If no one hears my name, we are doing our job well. I understand the mission of the district, and I am here to help provide the best educational experience for students."
