District Welcomes Barbara Eckberg

The Buffalo-Hanover-Montrose School District Community Education program has recently hired Barbara Eckberg as the new Early Childhood Family Education (ECFE) Coordinator. Eckberg replaces Devonna Tierney who was in the position for the last 32 years.

ECFE provides parent education and early childhood education for parents and their children from birth to kindergarten, as well as for expectant parents. Parents and children participate in classes, parent discussion groups, home visits, early childhood screening, special events and preschool classes. Licensed early childhood parent educators teach ECFE classes.

Eckberg has an extensive resume working in education and early childhood. She began her career as an ECFE children's and adult/parent educator in communities surrounding St. Cloud. She quickly moved into coordinator positions that had her overseeing family outreach, ECFE/school readiness, and early childhood screenings. She supported 14 Minnesota counties as a Ready 4K Central Minnesota Outreach Coordinator, providing parents with resources and information, increasing access to quality early care and education, and promoting the quality of early care and education to professionals. For the last three years, Eckberg has served as the Early Childhood specialist in Eastern Carver County where her responsibilities were extensive.

Director of Community Education Kim Carlson is excited to have Eckberg as a part of the ECFE team. "Eckberg is innovative, a strong communicator and a natural coach," Carlson shares. "She has high expectations and an excellent ability to work with others. Her skills and experiences will be a great asset to an already solid team of early childhood educators. We have an outstanding ECFE program, and I know she will help our program grow and take it to the next level."

Confident she is up to the challenge as the next BHM ECFE Coordinator, Eckberg has wasted no time getting started. "I'm excited to be a part of this district," states Eckberg.  "My professional practice has taken me from the classroom, to families' living rooms for home visits, through collaborations and into leadership roles within the public school system; all in an effort to serve families and children. I believe I can offer a depth of professional practice that has been acquired from the intentional professional path I have selected. I have met with this district's amazing group of early childhood educators, parent advisory council members and support staff. I am blessed to have found a home with the Buffalo-Hanover-Montrose early education team."

Eckberg received her BS in elementary education from St. Cloud State University (SCSU) in 1983. She has since gone on to obtain licensing in parent and adult education and as a community education director, both from SCSU. Eckberg is currently taking classes at SCSU to earn licensing in Early Childhood Special Education.

Eckberg began working for the district July 3, 2017.
