State Shift of $261 Million Causes Confusion on School Portion of Property Tax Statements

The release of property tax statements (Truth in Taxation Statement) and the approval of the Buffalo-Hanover-Montrose School District (BHM) levy renewal on Election Day November 8, 2011, are causing some confusion among school district residents. And for good reason, it's confusing! School finances and taxes are never an easy topic to explain.

This week, in honor of Veterans' Day, the BHS Students Stepping Up (SSU) group is selling "I support our Veterans" buttons for $1 each.  100% of that dollar will help provide a ham dinner to MN Veterans' Homes and Hospitals.  Please continue to read this article for additional information on Veterans' Day, and the meaning of.  

This year, November 11 also marks the end of our first term, which means school will not be in session for BHM students K-12.

Attention Parents of Students Who Ride the Bus

Bus Company Needs Student Medical and Emergency Information

To promote the safety of all students using American Transportation Bus Company, parents are asked to provide medical and emergency information to the bus company directly by emailing or calling Dawn Johnson at 763-682-3232. Due to confidentiality laws the school district is unable to provide this information to the contracted transportation company.

The District/Community Teaching & Learning Council Seeks New Members

The BHM School District is seeking both parent and community representatives to serve on the District/Community Teaching & Learning Council for the 2011-12 school year.  Meetings will be held the first Friday of the month from October through April, from 7-8:30 a.m. at the Discovery Center (please note morning meeting time).

Phoenix Learning Center was awarded $5,000 for their 3rd place finish in the Green Sneakers contest by collecting 340 pounds of used tennis shoes for people in third-world countries.

Buffalo Community Middle School (BCMS) just announced their new assistant principal is Jeff Erickson who is currently serving as Dean of Students/Science Teacher at Annandale Middle School. Erickson will replace Matt Lubben who will be the new BCMS Principal. Both positions begin on July 1.

BHS Choir Director Mike Walsh Honored as Minnesota's Music Educator of the Year

Concert Choir and Band also Honored with Performance at Concert

Mike Walsh, Vocal Music Director at Buffalo High School (BHS), has been named the Minnesota Music Educator of the Year and was honored at the Minnesota Music Educators Association's (MMEA) Convention on Friday, February 18. Walsh is in his 26th year at BHS, directing three curricular and two co-curricular choirs, and teaching advanced placement music theory, classical music listening and American popular music classes.

In addition to Walsh's honor, the Buffalo High School Concert Band, under the direction of Scott Rabehl, and Concert Choir, under the direction of Walsh, were selected to perform at the MMEA Conference on Thursday, February 17 at the Minneapolis Convention Center. This performance compares to other activities advancing to a state tournament level of competition.

Latex Balloons Not Allowed in Schools

For the safety of our students, staff and the general public who use our buildings, the district is no longer allowing the use of latex balloons in any capacity, in any school building, at any time of the day. However, Mylar (foil) balloons are still allowed.
