Get Ready for Kindergarten!

We understand that kindergarten is an important step for children and families. At BHM Schools, we want your child to be ready for success in school. The following skills, while not required, are helpful indicators of kindergarten readiness.

Social & Emotional

  • Interacts positively with others
  • Participates in activities and stays on task for 15 minutes or longer
  • Copes easily without crying and regulates emotions and behaviors

Language & Literacy

  • Writes name and begins to identify upper and lower case letters

  • Uses scribbles, shapes, pictures or dictation to represent ideas and thoughts

  • Follows directions involving two or three steps

Math & Science

  • Counts objects in small groups

  • Recognizes and creates simple patterns

  • Identifies shapes and colors

Physical Development

  • Shows independence with self-help skills such as washing hands, toileting, zipping, tying shoes and eating

  • Draws a person with body parts

  • Demonstrates large muscle control by hopping, balancing, and throwing and catching a ball

BHM Kindergarten

The BHM Kindergarten Program Includes:

  • FREE breakfast for all kindergarten students
  • Instruction in core areas of literacy, math, science, social studies, health, and visual arts
  • Instruction in specialist areas: physical education and music
  • Opportunities for additional enrichment and classroom activities
  • Lunch and recess time, which provides opportunities for social interaction (Students may either bring a lunch from home or purchase meals through the district's food service program. Information is available to determine if your child qualifies for free or reduced meal prices.)
  • Access to KidKare (before and after school care)


Kindergarten Registration

Kindergarten registration information will be mailed to families beginning in January. Students must be five years old on or before September 1. Kindergarten registration nights are scheduled in February or March.

In addition to the forms found at the bottom of this page (under Related News, Resources & Downloads), you will also need the following documents for registration into BHM Schools:

  • A copy of you child's birth certificate
  • Up-to-date immuniztion records
  • Pre-school screening documents
  • Open Enrollment Form (if enrolling from outside of the district--form found below)


Early Childhood Screening
Early Childhood Screening is a requirement for entry into all Minnesota public schools. The district provides this free service to all district residents. To make an appointment, please call 763.682.8408.

All students must have the following immunizations before starting kindergarten:

  • DTaP (diphtheria, tetanus, pertussis): 5 doses
  • Polio: 4 doses
  • Hepatitis B (HBV): 3 doses
  • MMR (measles, mumps, rubella): 2 doses
  • Varicella (Chicken Pox): 2 doses

FREE Breakfast
When the legislature made the decision to fund all-day kindergarten beginning with the 2014-15 school year, they also decided to pay for breakfast for all kindergarten students. Each kindergarten student in BHM Schools will be offered a FREE breakfast at the start of each day.
